Spray Dryer Principle

1. Liquid Atomization: Firstly, the liquid feedstock (which can be liquid, suspension, solution, or slurry) is introduced into the feed system of the spray dryer. Typically, this feedstock undergoes pre-processing to ensure its suitability for spray drying.​


2. Atomization: The liquid feedstock is sprayed through a nozzle or atomizer at high pressure to form tiny liquid droplets or a mist, creating a spray of droplets.


3. Drying Chamber: Simultaneously, inside the drying chamber, hot air flows through at high temperatures. This hot air flow is usually generated by combustion of fuel, using hot water, or steam.


4. Rapid Evaporation: The tiny liquid droplets sprayed into the hot air are exposed to the high-temperature environment, causing the water or other volatile components in the liquid to rapidly evaporate. This results in the gradual drying of the droplets until they become solid particles.


5. Solid Particle Separation: The dried solid particles are carried out from the drying chamber, typically through an air flow, to collection equipment such as cyclone separators or filters. In these devices, the solid powder is separated, while the hot air flow is further processed or discharged.


6. Collection and Packaging: The solid powder is eventually collected and can be used for various industrial applications. It usually undergoes packaging, storage, and distribution for market use.
